In the spring of 2011, officials at the Indiana Veterans Home in Lafayette, IN decided to repair a severe slope failure that had occurred on the property. The failure left them with a 1.8: 1 slope to repair. Lawson Fisher, the engineering firm designing the project contacted D2 Land and Water Resources for suggestions on how to vegetate and stabilize the site. The slopes were so severe that there were safety concerns with placing and keeping topsoil on the slope.
D2 recommended utilizing Biotic Earth Black, a hydraulic growth medium, applied at a rate of 4,000 lbs. per acre, as well as Earthbound Scientific at a rate of 175 lbs. per acre. Biotic Earth Black was applied over the existing subsoil along with a custom native seed mix. Biotic Earth Black is a proprietary blend of rich organics, plant fibers, micro nutrients, humates and fungal mycorrhizae which will revitalize poor subsoil and enable vegetation establishment without importing topsoil. The contractor then covered the material with a Turf Reinforcement Mat (TRM) that contained a Coconut Fiber medium. The TRM provided immediate protection from the erosive forces that could affect the Biotic Earth Black. It also helps to regulate temperature and maintain the moisture levels in the germination zone. The TRM was anchored to the slope using 3’ lengths of rebar. The project was installed in early June of 2011.
By the fall of 2011, the native plants which can take up to 3 years to fully establish, had begun to fill in and stabilize the slope. Germination rates of the various plants were observed to be higher than what was normally expected using that seed mix.
Since the fall of 2012, the site is covered in dense vegetation, which combined with the TRM, protects the slope from the threat of erosion and slope failure.
Biotic Earth products can be used in conjunction with other erosion control materials to provide a safe, natural, cost-effective alternative to traditional methods of slope stabilization. This case study also shows that in areas where topsoil is not practical a soil amending approach is a reasonable solution.
After taking advantage of Verdyol Biotic Earth hydraulic mulches or other products for hydro-seeding, you will need to maintain the new lawn. There are a few things your new lawn will need in order to stay healthy and to thrive. You will need to make sure you are practicing proper watering techniques as well as mowing and fertilizer maintenance. This will help you to have a lawn that will look great and last as long as you want it to.
When watering your new lawn, keep in mind that you will need to water it about two to three times a day while it is new. By using a watering cycle of 15-20 minutes for every watering, you will be able to provide sufficient water to the roots and encourage growth. If there is rain in the forecast, make sure to water your lawn in accordance with the rainfall accumulation. Never overwater your lawn to the point that there is runoff or puddles. Switch to watering once a day for a longer period of time after the first mowing.
Mowing your lawn will take a certain amount of precision when cutting it the first time after applying erosion control products. Allow the grass to reach a height of three inches before cutting for the first time. Use the mulching option on your mower the first few times and only cut the top third of the grass. Always make sure the blade is sharp to prevent tearing the grass.
When we apply hydraulic mulch during seeding, we also include a high quality fertilizer to encourage a strong root base. Use a high nitrogen fertilizer about four weeks after the initial installation. If you apply fertilizer too early, it can burn the grass and may even kill it altogether. Fertilizer should be applied when the grass is light green in color. After initial fertilizer is applied, reapply every six to eight weeks over the course of the summer.
Minnesota Erosion Control Association releases new video on the importance of properly disposing of wastes after construction jobs.
Concrete waste and sediment laden water is harmful to our surface waters. This short video provides tips and instructions for proper handling and disposal of excess concrete, and water used for washing concrete tools and equipment. This video also discusses techniques and products available to help remove sediment from water pumped from dewatering small construction sites.
At Verdyol Biotic Earth, we are in the business of building stronger soils to establish the best soil for the way you will use it. There are two soil builders we like to use with our erosion control products you should get to know to get the most out of your soil and to maintain the stability of the vegetation you have for any given area. Each has been tested to assure it is effective and can be used for just about any application.
Our EarthBound 2000 Soil Stabilizer is a perfect example of a soil builder we like to use with the hydraulic mulch we offer. This product is perfect for use on any mild to moderate slopes to provide the stability needed to prevent erosion as seen in these kinds of conditions. The basis of the formulation is to provide cross-linking molecules in association with long chain molecules and hydrocolloid tackifier with vegetable gum to create a more stable soil structure and a better soil pore space.
Another perfect example of a products used with Verdyol Biotic Earth hydraulic mulches is the EarthBound Scientific Soil Stabilizer. This is another scientifically produced soil builder that adheres to the soil surface and enhances the soil stabilization for enhanced erosion control. The product comes in a container that is clear and re-sealable. It is clearly marked and easy to use when you are ready to start maintaining more stable soil. Make sure to apply in light rain conditions and prior to more rainfall to get the best results, but the application can occur in just about any weather condition.
Choose from between these two soil stabilization products to assure your soil is strong and can maintain better vegetation. It is just one more way we are helping to prevent erosion to your soil.
A short five years later, we return to Milner Ridge, once barren, now full of vegetative life. To see more Before & After shots of the location, read our latest Case Study.
Hydroseeding is used mostly to check soil erosion and to ensure soil covering. The process includes the use of a seed, fertilizer, wood fiber and water mixture, which is combined in hydroseeding equipment and then sprayed over areas where it is required. Any type of seed can be used, ranging from grass seeds to wild herbs and even seeds of woody plants. This equipment is specially manufactured by hydroseeding manufacturers.
Excessive deforestation, construction, and mining activities leaves the land barren and infertile. Thus these plots cannot sustain further plant growth. Due to rain, run-off and wind erosion, the topsoil gets eroded. An effective way to combat this, is to cover the area with grass such that the roots hold the soil particles together and prevent erosion. Thus, the process of hydroseeding is used to replenish the soil.
Hydroseeding can be used in banks of rivers, reservoirs, and barren land to avoid topsoil depletion and even for residential plots or for commercial areas. The scope of hydroseeding is immense, as it assures the growth of vegetation within a short period of time and it is highly cost effective.
Certain things are required for hydroseeding such as machines or hydroseeding units and supplies such as fertilizers, tackifier, and fiber, among other things. Now, there are several hydroseeding manufacturers providing the best products suited specifically to certain types of soil. These scientifically made products are designed to replenish the soil, add moisture and humus to it, and create an environment, which shall jump-start the growth of seeds through the process of germination. Hydroseeding manufacturers are seeking to find solutions, which are environment friendly and such that its effects are long lasting. Hydroseeding manufacturers through research have developed hydroseeding products that are effective even during rainfall and are subsequent run-off resistant. The seeds develop to have long and resistant roots and cannot easily be uprooted.
There have been several instances across the United States and Canada where degraded road side land or land after mining activities were transformed into lush greenery in a matter of days with the use of hydroseeding techniques. Products obtained from good hydroseeding manufacturers can ensure plant growth within a week of application.
Biotic Earth Black was chosen as an alternative to importing top soil for a project in central Iowa. As this was a new alternative, the inspectors allowed Biotic Earth to be sprayed on one half of the channel, and traditional soil filling techniques on the other half. Biotic Earth Black was sprayed at a rate of 3500 lbs per acre and Earthbound Scientific at a rate of 70 lbs per acre. Both sides of the ditch were covered by a double net Curlex blanket from American Excelsior.
The contractor realized time savings by being able to spray the growing medium into the TRM instead of spreading topsoil. As a result of this, Biotic Earth was sprayed in other parts of the job instead of importing topsoil. Both sides vegetated well, however, there was evidence of unwanted vegetation growing in where the topsoil was imported. The areas that were sprayed with Biotic Earth were vegetated primarily with the seeds that were specified on the project.

A residential house had been built and there was a significant hillside that had been removed to provide space for a driveway. After the excavation of the site, the homeowner had a slope that was composed of very fine sands that needed to be stabilized. The slope was so unstable and steep that traditional methods of placing topsoil were difficult to utilize.
Verdyol Biotic Earth Black was recommended as a topsoil replacement and growth medium. Biotic Earth Black was applied at a rate of 3500 lbs / acre, along with Earthbound Scientific at a rate of 35 lbs / acre. Seed and fertilizer were mixed into the Biotic Earth Black slurry and applied at an even rate. The material was then covered with Flex Guard, from Mat Inc at a rate of 3500 lbs per acre.
RESULTS / SUCCESS:
The slope is covered with very lush vegetation just eight weeks out from initial application. The areas on the slope that are not covered are the results of deer feeding upon the new vegetation. The growth is impressive given the extremely dry conditions for the summer of 2012.
